Accutension Stetho is the first individual person validator for automated blood pressure (BP) monitors. Unlike weight or height, BP is measured INDIRECTLY with BP monitors. The pressure gauge of the BP monitor measures the pressure in the cuff instead of the blood. Algorithms are designed by BP monitor manufacturers to estimate BP. Even if the device has passed the United States National Standard protocol there is no assurance that a particular device will give accurate BP readings in individual users. According to a published joint scientific statement of the American Heart Association, the American Society of Hypertension and the Preventive Cardiovascular Nurses Association in 2008, there can be substantial numbers of individual subjects in whom the error is consistently 5 mm Hg with a device that has achieved a passing grade, and for this reason it is recommended that each automated BP monitor should be validated on each patient before the readings are accepted. Accutension Stetho is is a device that can assess accuracy of automated BP monitor readings on individuals by comparing the automated BP readings with auscultatory BP readings in the same measurement.
